How do I make an image file smaller?

For photos, start with WebP or JPG and Balanced (80%). Try Smaller file (65%) or reduce pixel dimensions if you need a smaller result. WebP can retain PNG transparency; JPG fills transparent areas with your chosen background. Compression and results vary by image and browser.

How to compress images with Picnori

  1. Choose your images

Select up to 20 PNG, JPG or static WebP files. Limits are 20 MB per file, 100 MB combined, and 32 million pixels per image.

  2. Choose format and quality

Pick Smaller file at 65%, Balanced at 80%, or More detail at 90%. The slider allows custom quality from 50 to 100%. Quality settings do not apply to PNG.

  3. Reduce pixel dimensions if needed

Enter just a width under Resize to calculate the height using the original aspect ratio. For example, a 2400 × 1600 image resized to width 1200 becomes 1200 × 800. This does not guarantee a file one quarter the original size.

  4. Compare and download

Check text and photo detail in Compare. Batch size comparison totals only the originals and results of successful images. After changing settings, compress again to create new results.

Image compression questions

Does 80% quality mean a file that is 20% smaller?

No. It is a browser encoder setting, not a measured quality score or file-size reduction. Check the actual file size shown after processing.

Why is my PNG barely smaller, or even larger?

Picnori’s PNG output does not use the quality slider. Re-encoding an already optimized PNG can increase its size. Reduce pixel dimensions or try WebP if you need transparency. A dedicated PNG color-quantization feature is not available yet.

Can I automatically compress to a target such as 200 KB?

Automatic target-file-size compression is not available yet. Lower quality or dimensions, process again, and check the result. Every image is different, so a fixed reduction is not guaranteed.

Are images or filenames sent to a server?

No. Selected images, filenames and results are processed in your browser. Originals are unchanged. Download results before closing the page. Site access and basic visit analytics still involve normal network requests.
